MEOW Refuge
A Sanctuary for Cats, Run by Artists
MEOW Refuge is an artist-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit cat sanctuary based in Roswell, New Mexico. The refuge provides humane, long-term care for feral, abandoned, elderly, injured, and surrendered cats in a region where animal welfare resources are extremely limited. At any given time, MEOW cares for approximately 30–60 cats and serves as the only safe, non-euthanizing alternative for residents who need to surrender animals.
The sanctuary is located on a secure, tree-shaded acre and includes three outbuildings. Cats have access to both outdoor areas and indoor enrichment spaces, allowing them to live natural lives with dignity.
MEOW continues the legacy of local animal advocate Mary McGee, who ran a cat refuge on the property for more than 30 years. Incorporated in 2023, MEOW is now run by artists and volunteers. Alongside animal rescue, the organization is developing shared creative spaces on site, including plans for a ceramics studio that will support local artists while helping sustain the refuge’s ongoing care of animals.
Support for MEOW goes directly toward daily care, food, medical treatment, spay and neuter services, and maintaining a safe, stable environment for the cats.
